  2. To prepare nurses to work in the planning and development of programs to assist the health of the population, stimulating a critical and creative spirit in the face of realities; to provide a theoretical-practical foundation that favors the development of research in nursing.

DYNAMICS OF THE COURSE

The course develops in up to 24 months and is organized in lines of research, which are linked to the projects that originate the theses. Compulsory subjects of the course develop strategies that allow students to complete their degree in four semesters, as advocated by the research funding agencies. Admission is granted by the Research Center, which offers the vacancies based on the availability of mentors in their respective research lines.

The defense of the research project should occur up until the second semester. The qualifying examination should occur up until the third semester, which corresponds to the preliminary report of the Master's thesis. It occurs after completion of the compulsory subjects of the course, and after having completed data collection (partial or full), followed by preliminary analysis.

For defense of the thesis, the master's student must demonstrate the submission of an article, a product of the dissertation, for publication in a journal indexed as Qualis A, or B1 to B3. The defense of the thesis must occur before the fourth semester.

DOCTORAL COURSE

The doctoral course began in 1989, and was the third to be deployed in Brazil, in the area of nursing.

The doctoral dissertation is a written, original work, unpublished and relevant to knowledge, which represents a real contribution to nursing about the topic, correlated with the line of research of the student's choice, approved by the advisor and submitted to the Examining Board.

OBJECTIVE

To qualify the nurse as a researcher who can produce scientific knowledge, to contribute effectively to the enrichment of the knowledge of nursing and to produce changes.

COURSE DYNAMICS

The development of the final product of the doctoral course is evaluated on its three steps: defense of the dissertation project, qualifying examination, and dissertation defense.

The defense of the dissertation project should occur before the second semester. The qualifying examination should take place before the fourth semester. This corresponds to the preliminary report of the doctoral dissertation. It occurs after the doctoral student has completed compulsory subjects of the course and after having completed data collection (partial or full), followed by preliminary analysis.
For defense of the dissertation, the doctoral candidate must submit an article, the product of his dissertation, for publication in a journal indexed with Qualis A or B1 to B3.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The student must meet, obligatorily, a minimum of 76% of the workload in the program disciplines (990 h/66 credits) and 300 h (20 credit) for the dissertation.
A candidate for the title of “Doctor of Nursing” must comply with, at a minimum, 1290 hours (86 credits), distributed in compulsory subjects, electives and public defense of the dissertation.

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL EXCHANGES

The program welcomes students from other graduate programs, within Brazil and from abroad, for placements in a “sandwich” modality, based on edicts of the agencies of promotion and inter-institutional agreements. The exchange student is accompanied by a tutor, a permanent professor of the program, and is integrated into the activities of the program of the Research Centers in accordance with the approved work plan.

POST-DOCTORAL PROGRAM

The Post-Doctorate in Nursing is designed for those possessing the doctoral degree, external to EEAN/UFRJ. It is developed with a minimum duration of three months, from the realization of the studies, with the maximum depth, contributing to consolidation of the line of research linked to one of the Research Centers of various departments of the EEAN.

The first Post-Doctoral program in nursing of EEAN was developed in the research line of Brazilian nursing history, in 2001. Currently, it receives doctorally prepared individuals from Brazil and abroad, in all lines of research of the program.

The program operates in accordance with the provisions of Resolution CEPG 03/2000, UFRJ.
